Wrist & Hand

That Old Wrist Injury Doesn’t Have to Run Your Life Forever

You can barely grip a cup of coffee, opening a jar feels impossible, and pushing yourself off the floor sends a jolt through your wrist. You’ve tried rest, braces, even injections. Nothing stuck.

We don’t just treat your wrist.

We assess your thumb, elbow, and shoulder to find the real load drivers behind your degeneration.

Focused shockwave and EMTT target tissue repair.

Not just symptom masking. These therapies stimulate regenerative signalling in damaged joint structures.

Progressive aftercare keeps you moving forward.

Rehabilitation, load management, and maintenance sessions designed so your results last.

60-minute one-on-one assessment + treatment plan.

No pressure, no contracts.

Is This You?

If any of this sounds familiar, you're in the right place.

Your wrist was fine until an old fracture or sprain came back to haunt you

Gripping, twisting, or pushing through your wrist causes pain every time

Your job or hobby demands heavy hand use and the pain is getting worse

Cortisone shots, braces, and rest only gave you short-term relief

You want non-surgical options before considering fusion, pins, or another procedure

The Real Problem

Why Your Wrist Still Hurts After “Trying Everything”

Most people have several of these happening at once. That’s why we assess the whole chain, from shoulder to fingertip, not just the painful spot.

OUR APPROACH

The Unpain 3-Part Wrist Joint Degeneration Relief Program

INITIAL VISIT

Whole-Body Root-Cause Assessment

Test wrist motion, grip, and joint stability alongside thumb, elbow, and shoulder function

Receive a clear written treatment plan with transparent pricing before you commit to anything

First 3 to 5 Weeks

Pain & Inflammation Modulation

Focused shockwave therapy to stimulate tissue repair and reduce pain at the joint

EMTT sessions to support deeper regenerative signalling and pain modulation

Manual therapy and chiropractic joint techniques targeting wrist, thumb, and proximal chain

Make gripping, twisting, and pushing through your wrist tolerable, fast.

6+ Weeks and Beyond

Strength & Progressive Aftercare

Progressive grip and wrist strengthening alongside shoulder and scapular stability work

Load management education to reduce repetitive flare-ups at work or in the gym

Maintenance shockwave and EMTT sessions on a monthly to quarterly basis as needed

What To Expect

What Results Can I Expect?

Every case is different, but research and our clinical experience consistently show:

Pain improvement within the first 4 to 6 weeks. Many patients begin noticing pain improvement within the first 4 to 6 weeks of combined treatment, with continued gains through 24 weeks.

Less pain with gripping, twisting, and weight-bearing. Gripping, twisting, and weight-bearing through your wrist become less painful as tissue capacity improves and load is better managed.

A chance to delay or avoid surgery. For many patients, this approach can help delay or avoid surgical procedures like fusion or proximal row carpectomy by slowing degeneration and restoring function.

Our promise: we will tell you honestly at the assessment if we don’t believe you’re a good candidate for this approach.

EVIDENCE

The Research Behind Our Approach

Shockwave therapy reduced pain and disability more than exercise alone in a prospective clinical trial on degenerative thumb arthritis, the closest joint analogue to wrist degeneration.

Manual therapy combined with targeted exercise produced significant pain reduction compared to sham treatment in a double-blind randomized trial for degenerative thumb arthritis.

Adding scapular and shoulder exercises to standard physiotherapy improved wrist and elbow function and grip strength in a systematic review of randomized trials.

EMTT added to standard care produced greater pain and disability improvement at 12-week follow-up in a prospective randomized controlled trial.

Combined shockwave and EMTT protocols showed continued symptom improvement through 24 weeks in a randomized trial on tendon and joint conditions.

Outcomes are group averages from clinical trials; individual results vary.

Wrist Joint DegenerationFAQ

Here are answers to some of the most common questions about Wrist Joint Degeneration.

6 results found

Is shockwave therapy used for wrist arthritis or joint degeneration?

Yes. While direct wrist degeneration trials are still emerging, shockwave therapy has shown meaningful pain and disability improvement in clinical trials on degenerative thumb arthritis, which is the closest small-joint analogue. At Unpain, we use focused shockwave as part of a combined protocol, not in isolation. We map out the right approach during your initial assessment.

Can an old wrist fracture cause arthritis years later?

Yes. Research shows that roughly one in three people who fracture their wrist (distal radius) develop post-traumatic arthritis within about five years, even if the fracture was not in an older population. Cartilage damage from the initial injury can set up a slow progression toward degeneration. We review your injury history and assess how it’s affecting your joint now.

How many shockwave sessions are typically needed?

Clinical trials on similar conditions use 3 sessions (one per week), and our typical plans range from 3 to 5 shockwave sessions paired with 8 to 10 EMTT sessions. The exact number depends on your case. We discuss this in detail before you commit to anything.

Why does my wrist pain come back every time I return to work or the gym?

When structural damage has reduced your wrist’s motion and load tolerance, repetitive gripping and force exposure will trigger flare-ups. The fix isn’t just to rest and repeat. It’s addressing the structural deficits, improving tissue capacity, and managing how much load goes through your wrist. We map this out in your first visit.

Can thumb arthritis actually cause what feels like “wrist pain”?

Yes. The thumb base joint sits very close to the wrist, and degeneration there can change how you grip and pinch. That shifts extra load onto wrist structures and produces symptoms that feel like “wrist arthritis.” We always assess the thumb as part of a wrist degeneration workup.

What if cortisone injections didn’t help my wrist arthritis?

Injections address inflammation temporarily but don’t change the structural or mechanical drivers behind your degeneration. Our approach combines shockwave, EMTT, manual therapy, and progressive rehabilitation to treat the tissue and the loading pattern, not just the symptom. We review this with you during your initial assessment.
